150. Sunrise - Goulding's Campground

Sunrise – Goulding’s Campground and RV Park

above Monument Valley, Utah

October 1, 2010

After a long day which began hiking up to Delicate Arch, then picking up Uwe in Moab, then heading to Natural Bridges National Park, and then a somewhat tedious drive from the plateau of Natural Bridges, down a very steep and narrow road from a spectacular overlook known as Moki Dugway. This overlooked the so called Valley of the Gods. The ranger at Natural Bridges N.P. had suggested this route to us, and warned us that the last 3 miles was precipitous. The sudden view from Moki Dugway was unexpected, and the road down into the valley was so narrow that we were warned that our “tin can” might not be able to negotiate the switchbacks and that traffic coming from below – if present – would mean trouble since the narrowness of the road would not allow vehicles such as ours to travel in a different direction from cars coming from below. Our intrepid pilot (Scotty McCampbell) headed on – the frighteningly steep switchbacks were many, and luckily in the 3 miles we did not meet a vehicle heading toward us. Once in the Valley we drove on stopping in Mexican Hat (for a fill up) and then on into Monument Valley (or Tse' Bii' Ndzisgaii) where we ate at Goulding’s Lodge restaurant, before checking in to the campground and RV park. It was here that a welcome shower and shave was accomplished. In the morning we awoke to this colorful sunrise.
