78. Sitting Bull’s Monument

west of Mobridge, South Dakota

September 23, 2010

On a prominence overlooking Lake Oahe, there were no signs directing us to the area. The site was very remote and very simple. The day was rainy, windy, and cold (temp of 40ºF). This was in keeping with my memory of the National Geographic article – the weather was the same that day as well. There were actually two memorials here – one near the turn-off dedicated to Sakakawea, and the other, overlooking the water, to Sitting Bull. We spent about a half an hour walking about. This carving of Sitting Bull was carved by famed sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski.
