91. Mt. Rushmore (night)

Keystone, South Dakota

September 23, 2010

The night lighting ceremony was a bit strange. We arrived just before 8pm, parked the car, and then started up this quarter mile walkway lined with granite pillars and having to some degree the feeling of a Greek Temple. Our walk was accompanied by patriotic commentary coming from hidden speakers with the walkway leading to a crowd gathered at the end and looking at first to an unlit mountain and after the patriotic commentary was over, to the presidents, carved in granite. The carving was done from 1927 – 1941 by sculptor Gutzon Borglum, and eventually completed by his son Lincoln Borglum.
