96. The South Dakota – Wyoming Border Heading West

September 24, 2010

After our second visit to The Badlands we headed west, again passing by Keystone (S.D.) and Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse, South Dakota (and the Crazy Horse Memorial); over the Black Hills of South Dakota via Custer (South Dakota – Rt 89/385) and then Rt 18 to the border with Wyoming. To some degree the Black Hills reminded me of certain areas of Vermont, but on reaching this Wyoming border the terrain took on a somewhat stark and very rural and open character. This was the plains, It rivaled a moonscape in some areas. with wide open spaces and little in the way of substantial homesteads. The few that we came across were just that, few and far between. There was little in the way of traffic. We passed over into Wyoming at about 5:30 PM.
