184. A Sucker Hole

Zion National Park - Utah - October 4, 2010
Above the Tin Can

We called these transient openings in the clouds sucker holes an expression that Susan and I had learned years ago when we were out in Yellowstone. These holes would open up above us, we would think that this meant the weather was clearing, and we would head out to hike. The sucker hole, however, would close up, rain would return, and we would have been "suckered" into getting out there. Weather in Zion (and later Bryce) was challenging and we soon learned to ignore the sucker holes.
